Bear Grylls lives in his 100 Year hoodie (£395). “Pre the commercialisation of any new technology, it is inevitably expensive.”Īnyway, Musk can afford a Mars jacket, if he wants one. The prices reflect the materials and methods they use, says Nick. We look around and wonder: why is no one else designing for climate change, resource scarcity, space colonisation? The solar-charged jacket is £395, the Mars jacket £795. He’s into materials, and making stuff that lasts for 100 years out of rubbish. Nick is more intense – he is more about pictures and design. Steve does words and business – he fizzes and bubbles with enthusiasm, like Willy Wonka. “People around the world attacking stuff creatively, practically and with genuinely good principles.” An architect by training (Steve studied history of art) he mentions some of his heroes: Le Corbusier, Richard Rogers, Bjarke Ingels – as well as the designer Neri Oxman and the chef René Redzepi. “Because he’s looking into the future and designing solutions that he feels humanity is going to need in order to be able to survive.”Īh, here’s the other brother, Nick, undeniably identical but, helpfully, dressed differently, in Vollebak’s Garbage sweater – made of old firefighter suits and bulletproof vests, obviously. But he says they would like to chat to Musk about some stuff and admits he is an inspiration. Either Steve doesn’t know or he’s not telling. He shows me some of their other stuff: the Apocalypse jacket, built to withstand lava, and the space-dust-proof Mars jacket, which has a 3D printed “vomit pocket” in case you get a bit queasy up there. Space-dust-proof … the Mars jacket – complete with vomit pocket. “We look around and wonder why is no one else designing for this?” “It’s a crazy time – of climate change, resource scarcity, disease spreading around the world, space colonisation,” Steve says. Now they design clothes not so much for next season, more for next century. “It was a three-year, very elongated ‘piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing’.” “That sounds like we just went ‘ping’,” Steve says with a laugh. These challenges all led to products: a relaxation hoodie that zips up over your face (there are breathing holes), a range of incredibly lightweight clothes that dry really fast, a solar-charged jacket that can give off light when needed, and clothes made entirely from natural material that you can bury at the end of their life. “The challenges we faced were: how do you sleep well the night before you’re racing? If you’re about to die of heat exhaustion, can your clothes help? If your head torch runs out in the middle of the night, can your clothes help? When you’ve finished racing through the Amazon, what do you do with your clothes if they’re covered in faeces and ants?” If you’re about to die of heat exhaustion, or if your head torch runs out in the night, can your clothes help? And they ran ultramarathons that is how it began, thinking about how running clothes could be improved. Steve and Nick used to work in advertising. “At some point I’m going to be on my deathbed and I’m going to think: what did I do? Did I have fun? We try to do ideas that we’ll be proud of.” ![]() Steve says he and his brother didn’t think about uses, pointing out that when Benjamin Franklin witnessed an early hot air balloon flight in the 1770s and was asked what it was good for, he responded: “What good is a newborn baby?” They do things for fun, Steve says. Again, it’s only in infrared light, but I’m thinking that if you don’t want to be detected by one of those thermal imaging cameras police helicopters have, then a thermal camouflage jacket would be very handy. The next step is to scale down the size of the patches, so that an object can blend into more complex surroundings – a person in a forest, say. The key thing is that the graphene patches can be programmed individually, to emit different levels of thermal radiation, to blend in with the surroundings. ![]() ![]() Fireproof and windproof … the 100 Year hoodie, as worn by Bear Grylls. Young Avestan) calendar in 503 BC and afterwards, the first day of the year (1 Farvardin= Nowruz) slipped against the vernal equinox at the rate of approximately one day every four years. In Persia (Iran) after the reform in the Persian calendar by introduction of the Persian Zoroastrian (i. The mean Julian year was the basis of the 76-year cycle devised by Callippus (a student under Eudoxus) to improve the Metonic cycle. The length of nineteen years in the cycle of Meton was 6,940 days, six hours longer than the mean Julian year. The octaeteris, a cycle of eight lunar years popularised by Cleostratus (and also commonly attributed to Eudoxus) which was used in some early Greek calendars, notably in Athens, is 1.53 days longer than eight mean Julian years. A century later, when Pliny dated the winter solstice to 25 December because the sun entered the 8th degree of Capricorn on that date, this stability had become an ordinary fact of life.Īlthough the approximation of 365 + 1⁄ 4 days for the tropical year had been known for a long time, ancient solar calendars had used less precise periods, resulting in gradual misalignment of the calendar with the seasons. Varro used it in 37 BC to fix calendar dates for the start of the four seasons, which would have been impossible only 8 years earlier. This proved useful very soon after the new calendar came into effect. Ĭaesar's reform was intended to solve this problem permanently, by creating a calendar that remained aligned to the sun without any human intervention. However, since the pontifices were often politicians, and because a Roman magistrate's term of office corresponded with a calendar year, this power was prone to abuse: a pontifex could lengthen a year in which he or one of his political allies was in office, or refuse to lengthen one in which his opponents were in power. If managed correctly this system could have allowed the Roman year to stay roughly aligned to a tropical year. Some say the mensis intercalaris always had 27 days and began on either the first or the second day after the Terminalia (23 February). The net effect was to add 22 or 23 days to the year, forming an intercalary year of 377 or 378 days. This intercalary month was formed by inserting 22 or 23 days after the first 23 days of February the last five days of February, which counted down toward the start of March, became the last five days of Intercalaris. In addition, a 27- or 28-day intercalary month, the Mensis Intercalaris, was sometimes inserted between February and March. The ordinary year in the previous Roman calendar consisted of 12 months, for a total of 355 days. For any given event during the years from 1901 through 2099, its date according to the Julian calendar is 13 days behind its corresponding Gregorian date (for instance Julian 1 January falls on Gregorian 14 January). In other words, the Julian calendar gains 3.1 days every 400 years, while the Gregorian calendar gains 0.1 day over the same time. That is more than the actual solar year value of approximately 365.2422 days (the current value, which varies), which means the Julian calendar gains a day every 129 years. ![]() They follow a simple cycle of three normal years and one leap year, giving an average year that is 365.25 days long. The Julian calendar has two types of years: a normal year of 365 days and a leap year of 366 days. Worldwide adoption of this revised calendar, which became known as the Gregorian calendar, took place over the subsequent centuries, first in Catholic countries and subsequently in Protestant countries of the Western Christian world. The calendar became the predominant calendar in the Roman Empire and subsequently most of the Western world for more than 1,600 years until 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII promulgated a minor modification to reduce the average length of the year from 365.25 days to 365.2425 days and thus corrected the Julian calendar's drift against the solar year. It was designed with the aid of Greek mathematicians and astronomers such as Sosigenes of Alexandria. It took effect on 1 January 45 BC, by edict. This calendar, proposed by Roman consul Julius Caesar in 46 BC, was a reform of the earlier Roman calendar, a largely lunisolar one. The Julian calendar is still used in parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church and in parts of Oriental Orthodoxy as well as by the Berbers, whereas the Gregorian calendar is used in most parts of the world. The Julian calendar is a solar calendar of 365 days in every year with an additional leap day every fourth year (without exception). For the terms 'Julian date' and 'Julian Period', see Julian day. For the day-number calendar used for astronomical and historical calculations, see Julian day. Well we have everything pretty much ready for that. Now after all this, it is very easy to make our bullet deals damage to the enemy after touching them instead of using raycasts. Split each character spritesheet to generate the frames. ![]() I configured the Red Character’s Spritesheets to Point on Filter Mode, Multiple on Sprite Mode and 48 pixels per unit. I downloaded some free assets from herefor the characters. So, I will show you how you do both of these methods, but first let’s setup the project. This mode is more precise and faster than using prefabs because you instantly get the enemy if the ray hits it at that moment. Point B being where the ray hits on the collider) directly where the gun is aiming at and if the ray hits an enemy collider then we can deal damage. ![]() Using this method, instead of instantiating anything, we will cast a ray (basically a line from point A to point B. We can instantiate prefabs from the fire point coming from the player and check if the instance collides with an enemy to deal damage, in this method the bullets can take a little time until it reaches the target, you can set its velocity but you cant put too fast so you dont break collision handling, also there is seconds or miliseconds that the enemy can escape the bullets. But if you want to see the bullets in the air, even for a fraction of a second, until it hits the target then using prefabs is a better way to achieve that. If you want a bullet to immediately hit the target you are aiming then maybe raycast is the best way to go. Using Prefabs or Raycasts will do to make it, you can choose one of them based on what you want to achieve in your game. Here is a simple walkthrough to make a simple 2D shooting mechanic. |
